The Yards, Washington DC, USA
Overview
Fabric Architecture was approached to design and deliver a striking exhibition pavilion. Situated outside the Nationals’ Baseball Park, on the edge of the old Navy Yards, the design had to complement this prestigious new stadium whilst creating an eye-catching focal point to draw in the crowds en route to the game. RIHA Design, lead architects for the redevelopment, suggested a cantilevered 50’ x 30’ double conic canopy and this became the basis of the design which will remain at its current location for 5 years, before being dismantled and reinstalled elsewhere within the Yards development.
Design solution
The complex engineering and analysis required to achieve this form using the raked glulam masts was taken on by the specialist design team at Fabric Architecture, who found a practical solution to the brief. Close collaboration with five other agencies working on site led to efficient execution and complete accuracy. Specialist materials were sourced worldwide: the tapered glulam masts were manufactured in Oregon, the lighting truss designed and manufactured in Canada, the fabric and galvanised steel tripods were shipped from England. Fabric Architecture’s successful project management ensured that these elements arrived exactly on schedule and installation was completed in just five days.
