Voyager School, Peterborough, UK
Overview
Originally designed to be a traditional polycarbonate bicycle shed, the creative design approach of architects AA Projects and main contractor Bouygues gave Fabric Architecture the opportunity to design a functional and beautiful solution to bicycle storage. Providing open access to and area of almost 400m2 with only 4 supporting masts, the structure houses 262 stands and capacity for over 500 bicycles.
Design solution
Initial concepts utilised Signature Structures in their original scale and enlarged versions, including Double Conics and the 10m Pagoda. The final design took the protective qualities of an umbrella form and repeated this shape 4 times to keep the height of the cones in proportion visually whilst retaining the function of the structure to protect the bicycles from the weather.
