Overview

First off the blocks, Fabric Architecture has recently completed an entrance structure for Portland Marina. In April 2009 Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas opened a brand new 560 berth marina in Portland Harbour which is to host the sailing events for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
 

Richard Reddyhoff approached us directly with the intention of installing a bespoke structure to shelter the secure entrance. The structure would need to provide lighting and all-weather protection whilst the automatic gates opened to the pontoon gangway, with provision for security cameras integrated into the structure.
 

The perfect solution came in the form of a Bandshell product, from Fabric Architecture’s range of Signature Structures. Available in 6m and 10m diameter sizes, the Bandshell has an internal drainage system and provision for lighting, audio and CCTV systems. The 6m version was selected to fit the available space and budget, with the steelwork colour-matched to the fabric screen supports that line the gangway entrance.
 

The fabric specified was a silicone coated glass, ideally suited to the harsh marine environment as it is completely inert and has a lifespan of over 30 years. The canopy design draws its inspiration from sail making techniques, creating a lightweight building with spinnaker roof.
 

During the Olympic games of 1996 and 2000, Fabric Architecture designed, manufactured and installed 57 structures throughout 32 Olympic venues. The designs focused on venue integration and ease of installation, with over 2000 square metres of covered space. Many of the structures were modular and re-locatable, as well as permanent and used for competitor facilities, information kiosks, ticketing, refreshments, lost and found, etc.
