Navigation Road Awnings, UK

Overview

It is approaching the five year anniversary of Fabric Architecture’s brise soleil system being installed at Navigation Road Primary School and the teachers and pupils are still feeling the benefits. The beautifully designed shading system reduces solar glare and heat gain, making the classroom environment much more comfortable for everyone during the school day.

Fabric Architecture’s brise soleil system differs from ordinary aluminium louvre systems for several reasons:
  • The use of silicone coated glass fabric still allows 40% of light to transmit through the material, meaning that the room beneath stays shaded from strong sun but not dark and murky in normal UK conditions.
  • This fabric is also environmentally sustainable to manufacture and fully recyclable.
  • The aesthetic effect of the organic curves in a lightweight tensile fabric system adds interest and drama to a facade – particularly important on refurbishment projects.

Of course, there’s also the benefit of any brise soleil system: reduced solar heat gain and air-conditioning costs, protection from glare, the flexibility to allow natural ventilation through open windows and the ability to maintain an uninterrupted view through glazing.

Navigation Road Primary School is certainly happy with the benefits from Fabric Architecture’s brise soleil system. Their classrooms are now cool, comfortable places where students can concentrate on their learning without distractions from bright light or stifling heat. The building also stands out from other schools in the area because of their architecturally beautiful canopies.
