Castletroy Park, Limerick, Ireland
Overview
The crowning glory of Castletroy Park arrived in the form of a striking tensile performance structure. The E2.2M regeneration of 17 acres has created one of the largest purpose-built public park and amenity areas in the region. The development, designed by local company Nicholas de Jong Associates Urban Design, features 1.2km of pedestrian pathways, a fully equipped children's playgound, skateboarding area, circular cycle route and central performance and exhibition area with covering tensile structure. The architects called on Fabric Architecture to develop and realise their concept, as it would form the centerpiece to the entire project.
Design Solution
The architect had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve and Fabric Architecture was able to deliver in terms of design, budget and programme. The lightweight 3-core truss arch provides the main support and fixing locations for the canopy. Special membrane plates were designed to capture rainwater run-off, directing it to underground drainage.
