Bournside School, Cheltenham, UK
Overview
As a Specialist Visual Arts College, Bournside School in Cheltenham is committed to providing a stimulatingly creative environment for its pupils. With this objective in mind, a project was undertaken to re-invigorate a quadrangle at the school to add points of interest and a sheltered area where students could eat their lunches while protected from the elements. As well as working with a local sculptor to create brightly painted carvings of "pole people", representative of different cultural traditions from around the world, the school also specified a Pagoda from Fabric Architecture. This was chosen because they wanted maximum impact and colour for their budget (which was raised by the schools PTA) and the dramatic form of the structure, provided with blue fabric and green legs, achieved that.
The area has been transformed from drab and grey to inspiring and colourful. The school have described the project as "one that leaves a lasting legacy for all to enjoy", while a Year 7 pupil commented, "This project helps you have pride in the school".
