Ayr Racecourse, UK
Overview
The management of Ayr Racecourse wanted a dramatic yet practical shelter for their Winners Enclosure, so drawing inspiration from a previously installed Fabric Architecture canopy at Aintree Racecourse, the 11m x 8m Double Conic structure was chosen. The height was increased to allow good clearance for horses standing or passing underneath and the steel framework was subjected to additional engineering to allow for the strong wind loads the canopy needs to withstand given Ayr’s geographical location and proximity to the coast.
Completed in time for the 2008 Scottish Grand National Event, the structure was installed on to foundations by others, within a pre-laid brick area. With flowerbeds already planted up, great care was taken to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding landscaping.
More recently this iconic structure has made a star appearance headlining the front page of national newspaper, Scotland on Sunday, who ran a feature on the prestigious Ayr Gold Cup Festival.
