Aviation Beauport, Jersey

Overview

The entrance canopy to the new extension at Aviation Beauport creates a stunning focal point to Jersey's exclusive private airport. The large cantilever extends over 8m and when lit at night the canopy illuminates the arrivals set-down area below.

A feature entrance structure was proposed by local architects, Naish Waddington, as part of a new extension to the airport's terminal building. The cantilevered tensile canopy was required to give fire tender access to the terminal and adjacent airfield. The roof of the new single storey building would provide anchor points for the tensile canopy and its foundations were designed to accommodate both structures.

Design solution
The outline design provided by the architect was developed into a barrel vault form, capable of withstanding the weather conditions of the exposed, island location. A series of roof brackets were incorporated into the extension's design and fitted in advance of the canopy installation. These anchor points provided stability to the structure, allowing a lightweight steel design. Further stability was provided by the tie-rods fixed around the perimeter of the structure and between each mast, as well as adding a nautical detail to the design.
